Ring is back!

I suspect if you’re here looking for a peephole camera, what you really want is a video doorbell. But…you live somewhere that doesn’t allow you to install a regular video doorbell.

Alternatively, a peephole camera, which can be installed without having to make any permanent alterations to the building, can potentially fill the role of a video doorbell.

When I started searching for the best peephole camera, I expected to find products from all the usual suspects, e.g. Nest, Ring, Eufy, etc. However, the only product I found from an established smart home brand is the Ring Peephole Cam. Ring sold the Ring peephole cam for a couple years but in April 2021, it was discontinued. Thankfully, at the beginning of 2023 they brought it back, and it easily jumped to the top of my list as the best peephole cam.

All the other products I researched all come with limited features or limited battery life. For that reason, I’m reluctant to wholeheartedly recommend any of those peephole cameras.

The Ring Peephole Cam has been brought back by popular demand! And, it instantly lands at the top of my list for best peephole cam.

The Ring cam is essentially a 1080p battery powered video doorbell. It connects via WiFi so that you can receive notifications and communicate with any visitors remotely. It includes all the features you would expect on a video doorbell such as 2-way talk, night vision, a doorbell button, and a motion sensor. Unique to the peephole cam is a vibration sensor which is meant to detect if someone knocks.

Since it is part of the Ring ecosystem it works well with Amazon’s Alexa devices. You can use your Alexa devices to talk to visitors, view footage, or even create Alexa routines that are triggered by the peephole cam.
