Regular smoke alarms are dirt cheap. The cheapest models can be bought for about $5. The city I live in actually gives them away for free.
So why would anybody pay $100 or more for a single smoke detector? Well, because it’s a smart smoke detector.
I love connected devices. Heck, I created an entire website dedicated to them. However, I’m not entirely convinced that spending this kind of money is worth it.
There are low cost alternatives called smart listeners. In addition, there is one smart smoke alarm that’s fairly affordable.Read More
Levoit sent me their LV-PUR131S smart air purifier free of charge so I could review it. I’ve been using it for three weeks and here’s what I think:
I like it. It’s definitely the quietest air purifier I’ve ever owned, which makes it ideal for my bedroom. It comes in a great looking case and is super easy to use and maintain.
It doesn’t come with any advanced filtration gimmicks. Instead, it uses the same proven filtration methods that most other purifiers use.
However, it does include WiFi which effectively makes it a smart air purifier. The app is responsive and the WiFi connection is reliable. Integration with my Alexa was easy and surprisingly useful.Read More

Like it or not, we are constantly breathing conditioned air. And it turns out that indoor air is usually more polluted than outdoor air because stagnant air can accumulate dust and other toxins much more quickly.
A smart air purifier cleans your air just like a normal air purifier, but also gives you real time feedback and control of your air purifier and your indoor environment.Read More
If you’re in the market for a quality air purifier, you might want to check out the Philips brand of purifiers. They make a number of different air purifiers to suit rooms of different sizes and with various additional features. The specific model I’m looking at in this article is the Philips 1000i Connected Air Purifier.
It’s attractive, portable, and it’s a smart WiFi enabled air purifier with True HEPA. It works surprisingly well with the free Air Matters app on a phone or tablet. As an air cleaner, it does an excellent job of reducing pollen, allergens, dust mites, mold, pet dander, odors and gases* and this model is recommended for bedrooms up to about 200 square feet.Read More
